From prototype to daily operation
This is the gap where I see a great many AI projects stop.

What operating capability is
Picture a dish cooked beautifully in a competition. But cooking it well once in front of judges is quite different from serving it steadily every day to hundreds of customers, through the busy nights and the quiet ones and the days an ingredient is missing. Operating capability is the ability to hold up in that second case: not merely running well in the demonstration, but holding steady in daily operation.
People usually speak of three stages: prototype, product, and real operation. The gap between the second and the third is large. A Gartner survey in 2022 found that only around 53% of AI models made it from prototype to real operation, with almost half stopping along the way.
How this applies to running a business
I see many teams celebrate a little early at a successful demonstration, and then run out of breath when they have to operate steadily. Real operation demands the unglamorous things: who is accountable when it fails, the process for handling exceptions, how quality is tracked over time, how it is updated when the data changes.
The lesson applies to every initiative, not only AI. An idea proven in a meeting room has travelled a third of the way. The hard part, the part that decides success, is turning it into something that runs every day without the founder standing over it.
Which of your initiatives is stuck at a successful demonstration without reaching daily operation, and what is missing to get it across?
