From noise to an image
Every time an AI image turns out unexpectedly beautiful, I remember it was not painted the way we imagine. It was lifted out of a mess.

Every time I see an AI image turn out unexpectedly beautiful, I remember that it was not "painted" the way we imagine. It was lifted out of a mess.
What a diffusion model is
Picture a restorer standing in front of an old photograph speckled with noise. They do not repaint it from scratch, they patiently lift the noise away layer by layer until the face comes back into focus. Image models such as Stable Diffusion, released publicly in 2022, learn in exactly that way, through the denoising diffusion technique set out by Ho and colleagues in 2020.
During training, noise is deliberately added to millions of real photographs, one notch at a time, until they are nothing but static. The model is taught to do the reverse: look at a noisy frame and work out what it would look like with a little of the noise removed. Once it is fluent, give it a frame of pure random noise along with a description, and it clears the noise step by step in the direction the words point, until a coherent image emerges. The beauty here does not come from one flash of insight, but from a great many small controlled corrections.
How this applies to running a business
I see many products, brands and plans come into being by diffusion rather than by a perfect idea arriving fully formed. The first draft is almost always a noisy frame: untidy, overstuffed, not yet in focus. The value lies in the patience to clear the noise, each round removing something that is not right and correcting a detail that has drifted, instead of waiting for a finished version to appear on the first attempt.
What makes that process work is having a clear description to steer by, which is to say knowing where you are trying to get to. Without a destination, clearing noise turns into floundering. With one, each round of correction brings the thing one notch closer.
Which notch of noise is your current draft at, and what is the clearest next step to clear?
To your desk
An image model does not wait for inspiration to arrive. It starts from chaos and clears the noise step by step until the picture sharpens.
One thing to try this week: pick a decision you have been putting off because it is "not clear enough yet". Instead of waiting for it to clarify itself, write down everything tangled around it, then untangle exactly one point a day: one question answered, one assumption tested, one option ruled out. Clarity rarely arrives in a single bright morning. It emerges after a few patient steps.
